Kelly B. Castriotta is the Global Executive Underwriting Officer of Cyber at Markel Group, a holding company for insurance, reinsurance, and investment operations around the world.
In her current role, Kelly leads the global underwriting strategy for cyber risk impacting all lines of business. Kelly also leads the enterprise risk management efforts to identify, quantify, and solve for emerging risks. In that vein, she leads Markel Group’s AI Global Task Force, a thought leadership group of senior executives responsible for defining the intellectual framework for the adoption of artificial intelligence technology. She also is a member of an executive leadership team that develops talent acquisition strategy corporate-wide. As a collaborative leader, Kelly works across disciplines to ensure appropriate risk tolerances, reinsurance purchases, and exposure assessments across the Markel enterprise.
Kelly has a multifaceted background, holding leadership positions spanning underwriting, products, operations, claims, and litigation. Before joining Markel, she held two senior positions in a large international provider of financial lines products. In that capacity, she was responsible for all financial lines insurance products offered by its North American subsidiary. She also led the roll out of “silent cyber” solutions, creating new products, training tools, and operational roadmaps for all internal disciplines as well as external trading partners.
Kelly started her in-house insurance career as a claims attorney. Prior to that role, she was an insurance coverage attorney at a large Manhattan law firm. Upon graduating law school she was selected to serve as the sole Judicial Clerk to the Honorable Eugene Austin in the Superior Court of New Jersey.
As a recognized industry leader, Kelly won the Business Insurance 2020 Breakout Award. She served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of High Technology Law and has been quoted in the New York Times and Reuters on the topic of cyber insurance. Her 2021 law review article has been referenced in a recent federal court case regarding ransomware.
Kelly attended Boston College for her B.A. and M.A. (Philosophy) where she was named the Bernard Lonergan Fellow at Boston to College to pursue graduate studies in philosophy. She attended Suffolk University Law School for her J.D.
Kelly is a founding member of Chief, a private membership network focused on connecting and furthering female executive leaders. Throughout her career, Kelly has been an active member and has chaired various employee groups aimed at promoting inclusion and diversity in the workplace.
Kelly resides in Chicago with her husband.
